Lighting Is Everything

A good rule of thumb for nice soft shadows and highlights is to have your baby angled such that the light flows from the top of the baby's head on down their body at an approximately 45 degree angle.

Look for a soft shadow underneath the baby's nose to verify that you have this right.

IDEAL BABY POSES AND POSITIONS

IDEAL BABY POSES AND POSITIONS

LIGHTING

  • Set up the shoot near a large window, ideally, one where the sun isn’t directly outside that window.
  • Using soft light to add a soft glow instead of direct harsh sunlight will give a dramatic or moody look.
  • Use sheer curtains or blinds to help diffuse harsh light. It will soften the light and help with proper exposure.
  • Arrange the baby in a way where the light is coming in a natural direction.
  • Casting light should be from one side and angle from the top, but never from below.

Ideal position for best results are:

  • laying side-way

  • laying with face forward

Take inspiration from newborn baby photography photos available from the web.

Only use pose that are natural for the baby, we don’t recommend unnatural positions like the froggy position as it can be unstable and unsafe.

CLOTHING AND EQUIPMENT

  • Use a white backdrop like white bed-sheets and pillows as a background.
  • This helps catch light and allow for the final artwork to look much more realistic.
  • Bundle your baby up in timeless cute outfit that will still look cute for decades to come.
  • Or have baby in their birthday suit but remember to keep the room warm.
  • Use your phone camera at the highest resolution possible with no filter.
  • Keep the camera focused entirely on the baby's face and body.
  • Use a light reflector – like a homemade DIY aluminium foil to reduce shadows and create even lighting.
